Walking the Block
Opening Monday 6 October 2008
Stroudwater Textile Festival will be collaborating with the Craft Study Centre in Farnham and Templar Poetry to celebrate the launch of a wonderful new poetry book, 'Walking the Block', written by the gifted writer, Jane Weir, on the lives of textile artists Phyllis Barron & Dorothy Larcher.
First introduced in the 08 Festival in May, Jane Weir will read from 'Walking the Block'. This part poetic and part biographic representation of the creative lives and processes of these two innovative textile artists, who lived and worked in Painswick in the Stroud Valleys.
Alongside Jane Weir will be an exhibition of work by Linda Brassington, Head of Printed Textiles at the University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham.
To complement, there will be an exciting programme of talks, workshops and trips out to places of interest connected to Barron & Larcher.
Full details to be announced later. |

Stanza taken from:
Montreuil – Sur-Mar, Normandy Blocks ‘I was mad to know how they really worked’
Phyllis Barron
In your arms you carry
what looks like hewn blocks of Irish peat –
though it’s August and we’ve no need of a fire.
Sun blasted after a stint of sketching
I watch as you dump block after block.
A closer look tells me they’re too deformed
to be peat and have the spongy thud
of fruit wood; perhaps cherry or lime.

Olivia Laker Dell
During the 70’s and 80’s Olivia was based in Cheltenham making ‘one off’ dresses and bridalwear in antique silks and lace for her Montpellier shop, and exporting collections around the globe.
Selling her flourishing business in 1990, she began traveling and soon became hooked on the colourful ethnic dowry textiles of Central Asia, building the large collection now housed in her home near Nailsworth.
A skilled needlewoman Olivia has repaired many beautiful and rare items, equally at home on a fine lace veil, a William Morris curtain or exotic camel regalia, as well as producing her own work.
She is currently working on soft sculptured fabric jewellery and running textile workshops at her studio where students can dip into her treasure boxes of antique textile scraps.
